Celebrating a Decade Through the Voices of Our Team

Ten years ago, CIE Property Management & Consulting Inc. started with a vision. A decade later, that vision has grown into a thriving company serving communities across southern Ontario. Ask anyone at CIE what’s truly behind that growth, and the answer is always the same: our team. From the beginning, CIE has been built on a commitment to delivering a higher level of service, one powered by skilled, dedicated people and driven by the values of community, integrity, and efficiency. These aren’t just company ideals; they reflect what the industry has always needed more of, and what CIE was founded to provide.

To mark this milestone, we sat down with members of TeamCIE, spanning from our first employee to our newest team members to reflect on what these past 10 years have meant to them, and what continues to drive CIE forward.

A Decade In The Making

When CIE first opened its doors, the early days were defined by a handful of clients, a team that was learning as they went and a workplace that felt like family. That sense of closeness has stayed with the company every step of the way, even as the picture today looks very different. What began as a portfolio of a handful of properties has grown into one that now spans many corporations throughout southern Ontario. What was once a single software system has evolved into an integrated platform managing accounting, customer service, and service requests all at once.

Ten years in, that platform has become central to how CIE operates, not just for internal efficiency, but as a genuine tool for clients. Management reports generated directly from the system give boards access to the most current information available, empowering them to make informed decisions with confidence.

Ask anyone who has been there since the early days, and they’ll tell you the growth has been in the team itself. Team members who joined with little industry experience have grown into seasoned experts overseeing entire departments.

One team member recalled starting in a part-time role, handling payment processing, has over the years expanded their responsibilities into full oversight of accounts payable, receivable, and human resources functions.

What Hasn't Changed

For all that has changed, the team agrees: some things never change.

It’s the sense of family that comes up again and again. It’s a word that, in most workplaces, might raise an eyebrow, but one TeamCIE insists has only grown stronger with time. From the earliest days through to today, the philosophy has remained the same: collaboration first, always. When challenges arise, whether it’s a difficult process, an unexpected obstacle, or simply a hard day, the team comes together. Every voice is heard. Everyone’s contribution matters.

At CIE, the belief has always been that a team that works hard together should also have the chance to celebrate together. That balance of effort and enjoyment is something the company takes seriously. Throughout the year, the team comes together for events that have become part of the CIE calendar: an annual rafting trip that long-time staff now consider a true tradition, a Blue Jays game, summer golf days, the Santa Clause parade and holiday parties at wineries.

It shows up in the small, human moments as much as the big ones. There are stories of spilled coffee on office carpets, racing deadlines buried in file rooms before long weekends. There’s a story of one team member being timed running through the office during a mock “intruder” drill and not quite making it out in time. These are the moments that, years later, still bring laughter to a team that has clearly built something special.

The fun at CIE has never been just for its own sake. The team believes in showing up for the community the same way they show up for each other. Events like the Food4Kids Halton Battle of the Chefs and HerQuest for Hospice are two examples of opportunities to contribute to causes that matter, while doing it together. It’s a reflection of the same values that shape the workplace: work hard, care deeply, and make it count.

The Manager's Role: Before, During, and After

Perhaps nowhere was that resilience more evident than during the uncertainty of COVID-19. It was a difficult time for everyone, but it proved to be a pivotal one for CIE. The company had always been built around technology. The transition to remote work was a natural one as most of the team was already equipped to work from home without missing a beat. What could have been a period of paralysis became an opportunity: to refine processes, strengthen systems, and above all, to communicate. At a time when everyone was uncertain, CIE leaned into transparency and connection, meeting and often exceeding public health requirements so residents could feel as safe as possible.

It’s a chapter that, looking back, revealed just how much the foundation CIE had built, was built to last.

There’s also a quieter thread running through it all, a genuine care for one another’s success. Several team members point to the same idea, almost word for word. Helping each other succeed is what allows the company to succeed. It’s a mindset that hasn’t wavered, even as the team has grown from a handful of close colleagues to a larger group spanning departments and specialties.

A Fresh Perspective

That same sense of purpose is exactly what newer team members say they noticed first.

One recent addition was drawn to the role after encountering CIE’s work from the outside. They were struck by the professionalism and attention to detail in documents prepared for a property they had previously managed elsewhere.

For new team members, the onboarding experience itself often comes as a pleasant surprise. Rather than weeks of policies and procedures before getting started, they describe being welcomed into real, hands-on work almost immediately. It is more learning by doing, asking questions along the way, and feeling like a contributing member of the team from day one.

What stands out most, though, is leadership. New and long-time team members alike point to the same qualities: high expectations paired with genuine encouragement and mentorship without micromanagement, and a leader whose personality sets the tone for the entire company. Two newer employees shared how leadership helped shift their own mindset in moving away from constant self-doubt and second-guessing, toward confidence in their own work and judgment. It’s an important shift. One that speaks volumes about the kind of environment at CIE. Everyone is trusted to do their best work, encouraged to grow, and given the space to truly thrive.

New team members also describe noticing the same thing that veterans of the company have known for years: that teamwork isn’t just a talking point, but something practiced daily. At CIE, our team helps each other, shares knowledge freely and shows up for one another.

Full Circle

Ten years, a growing team, and a portfolio that has grown many times over and yet, the heart of CIE remains exactly where it started: with its team. The challenges of a demanding industry have been met, again and again, by a team willing to face them together. The growth that defines this past decade has been about every individual who walked through the door and decided to stay, to grow, and to build something meaningful alongside their colleagues.

Looking Ahead

As CIE celebrates 10 years, this is only the first of a few stories we’re excited to share. In the months ahead, we’ll be turning the spotlight toward our clients and the trade partners who help bring our work to life. But at the heart of it all, our team has helped build CIE into what it is today, and will continue to shape what comes next.
